Couple goals that aren't cringe: a practical framework

"Couple goals" became code for matching outfits. Here's how to set goals that actually shape the year — using a simple framework built around four categories.

The four categories

  • Connection. Goals about being closer.
  • Adventure. Goals about doing more together.
  • Build. Goals about constructing something — a home, a business, a tradition.
  • Grow. Goals about each of you becoming more of who you want to be.

The rules

  1. 3 goals per year, total. Not 3 per category. Too many goals = no goals.
  2. One must be uncomfortable. Growth lives outside the routine.
  3. Each must be measurable. "Be closer" is a wish. "Have a phone-free dinner every Sunday" is a goal.
  4. Review quarterly. Without review, goals decay by month three.

Examples by category

Connection: phone-free dinners; weekly 10-minute check-in; one weekend a month with no other plans.
Adventure: one new country; learn a skill together (climbing, cooking, language); a 5-day trip with no Wi-Fi.
Build: a savings target; a shared morning routine; a tradition (Friday cooking night).
Grow: one personal goal each that the other actively supports — therapy, fitness, a course, a creative project.

The conversation that sets them

Block 90 minutes. Each person writes their wishes alone first. Then share. Pick 3 you both want. Write them somewhere visible. The act of writing matters as much as the goal.

Use AI to track

Loviu's couple mode stores goals, checks in monthly, and reminds you when one is drifting. The hard part isn't choosing goals — it's not forgetting them by April.
